Moro (Blood Orange)
Described as having a "tangy rich orange flavour with overtones of raspberries or strawberries", the reputation of these beauties is hard to uphold! The flavour and aroma are truly outstanding. These oranges are often used by chefs to make bright ice dishes called sorbets.
The Moro Blood orange is so called because of the colour of its flesh, which varies from red striped to completely dark red. The outer skin will often be blushed with a red colour, especially at the basal end of the fruit. This is caused by a red pigment called zanthrophyll, that occurs naturally in some fruits and flowers.
The Blood orange group of oranges, which includes several different varieties, is thought to originate in northern Africa. The Blood orange is widely accepted in European countries but, compared to other fruit, is only occasionally sold in North America.
