Tamarillo

Known as tree tomatoes until 1967, this little fruit is somewhat unusual. Many people are unsure if it is a sweet vegetable or a bitter fruit. It is actually a bit of both. Select firm heavy Tamarillos and ripen at room temperature until they yield to slight pressure. Tamarillos must be peeled. Use a vegetable peeler or blanch in boiling water for about a minute, then peel. Tamarillos can be eaten raw by slicing in half and sprinkled with sugar and lime juice. Allow to sit for a few hours before eating. They can also be baked, simmered in syrup or made into jams or jellies.
