Dumpling Dale Organic Farm
Cawston, BC
A creek once crossed Gabi and Dave Cursons' farmland. It was filled in by previous owners to increase the area of arable land.
They may be able to restore the creek in the future. Until then they support conservation initiatives through organic farming practices and financial contribution to the program.
Elam's Organics
Cawston, BC
Tony (Elam) Wills' property is situated on the floodplain of the Similkameen River. Although the surrounding area is heavily farmed, wildlife continues to use Elam's protected aspen grove at the end of his property. The remaining patches of trees on the river lowlands are vital to the health and diversity of the native plants and animals.
Forbes Family Farm
Oliver, BC
Don, Jean, Gord and Steve Forbes have a deep appreciation of a once expansive wetland area that they have been able to protect from urban encroachment. Now, neighbours and school children share in watching this place from a community viewing area nd bird blind. The wetland on the Forbes farm is nesting habitat and an important stop-over for migrating species.
Harker's Fruit Ranch
Cawston, BC
Bruce and Kathy Harker and Art and Lena Nugteren are neighbours in the Similkameen Valley. These two families recognize that the health of their farms is reflected in the health of their shared creek and its adjacent vegetation. Projects with them will include enhancement of native creekside vegetation and the potential reconnection of a pond area.
Mariposa Organic Farm
Cawston, BC
Established in 1962 this family has continuously used organic methods on a portion of their property. The remainder is carefully stewarded to protect an expanse of grassland in the Similkameen Valley. It includes critical snake habitat and important Brewer's sparrow nesting areas. The farm is operated by Lee McFadyen and her two sons, Karl Ericksen, his wife Sarah, and Craig Eriksen.
O'Reilly's Farm
Oliver, BC
Dave O'Reilly knows that Park Rill Creek and its fringe of trees and shrubs is good for his farm. He voluntarily placed a conservation convenant on this area so that the natural environment is protected forever.
Rolling Sage Orchard
Cawston, BC
John and Irene Hutchinson skillfully blend organic farming methods with careful stewardship of a small area of ungrazed native grassland. This provides essential habitat for mariposa lilies, the rare Nuttall's cottontail, Brewer's sparrow, and several species of snake.
Roman and Bonnie Dust Farm
Osoyoos, BC
On the fertile bench above Osoyoos Lake, Roman and Bonnie Dust grow apples. The Dusts share their land with deer, birds and owls, and moose. They have removed their lower orchard along the lake in order to plant native species. They also protect a pocket of bunchgrass and shrub species above the lakeside fringe.
Ven'Amour Organic Farm
Cawston, BC
Steve Venables and Kim Brind'Amour's farm is nestled among rolling sagebrush, bunchgrass slopes, and a riverside cottonwood forest. Ecotourists can explore Ven'Amour's own 110 acres of natural habitat and enjoy the proximity of nearby protected areas:
- Chopaka West Grassland Park
- Lee McFadyen's 200 acres of grassland
- Similkameen River Pines
Vialo Orchard
Cawston, BC
Wayne Still has managed his orchard for 20 years with a deep respect for natural cycles of life:
Maintaining wild spaces in and around agricultural land is a worthy objective; they remind farmers of nature's productivity while providing a source of diverse beneficial species.
