Thrifty Foods Tuscany Village Opens in Victoria
Victoria, BC, September 19, 2007 - - - Thrifty Foods today celebrated the grand opening of its newest grocery store, located in Tuscany Village in Victoria, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Thrifty Foods executives, civic dignitaries and members of the community.
Grand opening festivities included a plaque presented to Thrifty Foods Tuscany Village from Tree Canada, an organization that encourages Canadians to plant and to care for trees in an effort to help reduce the harmful effects of carbon dioxide emissions. In partnership with Tree Canada, Thrifty Foods will plant 1,500 trees in the Saanich community to offset the carbon emissions that will be generated by the store. This makes Thrifty Foods Tuscany Village the first carbon-neutral grocery store on Vancouver Island and the second in Canada, the first being Thrifty Foods Coquitlam that opened in 2006.
"We're delighted to be affiliated with Tree Canada again and to expand our presence in Victoria," says Milford Sorensen, President & CEO, Thrifty Foods. "Our Tuscany Village store is truly unique and offers a themed Italian shopping experience."
The full-service store is the company's 20th retail grocery location and features a two-storey Galleria entrance, walk-in cooler in the floral department, Italian signage, a Wood Stone Pizza Oven in the deli, and Vancouver Island's first moveator that transports customers and their carts between the store and covered parking.
Thrifty Foods is well-known on Vancouver Island where it has been a community favourite since the company's inception in 1977. The Tuscany Village store joins 17 Thrifty Foods locations on Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island, and 2 stores in the Lower Mainland.
