We're committed to utilizing sustainable building designs and energy management best practices in all of our stores and distribution centres.

Our new locations are built with energy conservation in mind, and in 2011-2012 we will renovate five existing locations to increase their energy efficiency.

In 2011, we completed 40 energy conservation projects across all our locations including new freezer door anti-sweat controls, lighting upgrades, ceiling fans, night curtains on our open refrigerated cases, glass door dairy and freezer cases and refrigeration heat reclaim systems in our retail locations and warehouses.

Current Energy Management Best Practices

  • Energy efficient lighting systems at our stores and distribution centres
  • Digital dashboards - centralized energy management systems monitor and manage our HVAC, Lighting, Leak Detection, Power Monitoring and Refrigeration systems.
  • Heat recovery systems transfer waste heat from the refrigeration system to warm other areas of the stores and water
  • State-of-the-art lighting systems and controls in our stores

  • Installation of T5 and LED lighting
  • Use of pull-down "night covers" on open display cases
  • Use of energy efficient fans and coils and anti-sweat controls
  • Installation of refrigerant gas leak detection systems

Sustainability Programs

In several of our stores we are piloting a variety of conservation projects for eventual rollout to all stores.

  • Water conservation devices at all sinks, toilets, and faucets
  • Organic waste diversion programs
  • Replacement of open refrigerated dairy cases with energy efficient glass door cases

LEED Standards

Upon completion, our new Distribution Centre at the Victoria International Airport will incorporate many sustainable and energy saving features. Scheduled to be built to LEED standards, the 150,000 square foot facility will include waste recycling, heat capture, energy use monitoring, gas leak protection systems and environmentally farmed wood products.
