Players participate in a shopping spree benefitting the White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank
It was no ordinary day at our Morgan Crossing store last Friday, November 18. Customers and employees were delighted to find hockey heroes Alex Burrows and Mason Raymond dashing down the aisles in support of their local food bank.
Burrows and Raymond each spent 2 minutes flying through the aisles, grabbing items off the shelves and filling their carts with as much as possible. A friendly competition between the two of them saw Burrows win out - although the value of both players' carts went to the food bank.
"Thrifty Foods is serious about fighting hunger in our communities," says Thrifty Foods President Jim Dores. "Our special guests surprised our customers and staff with their enthusiasm, and their presence in our store helps create awareness about those in need in our communities at this time of year and throughout it."
"Helping out the local food bank is a no-brainer with winter coming on and we were happy to participate," says Alex Burrows. "We pushed it as hard as we could and got our shopping carts filled up with over $5,500 in groceries for the food bank - definitely raised a few eyebrows in the checkout line, too!"
Thrifty Foods has been feeding the hungry for over 15 years, notably through programs like BC Sharing, a year-round program, and Food for Families, available at tills in November and December each year. Participating customers purchase coupons in various cash denominations and Thrifty Foods donates the funds directly to 16 food banks across BC. To date, Thrifty Foods has raised over $650,000 in groceries for those in need in our communities.
