Twenty-ninth Store to Open in Bustling Comox Valley
Victoria, BC, March 17, 2011
- Thrifty Foods today announced a new shopping centre on 12.3 acres of land located at the intersection of Ryan and Lerwick in east Courtenay. The retail complex will be anchored by Thrifty Foods and complemented by a range of other class A commercial tenants.
"The Comox Valley has grown tremendously since Thrifty Foods opened the Courtenay store there in 1994," says Jim Dores, President of Thrifty Foods. "After researching the area extensively, we recognize the growth potential of this vibrant community and we are ready to begin construction on a brand new retail centre in the Comox Valley."
The retail centre is expected to be complete in 2012 provided all of the necessary approvals are granted and work proceeds on schedule.
"The opportunity to expand our presence in the Comox Valley with our 29th store is an exciting prospect for our team," adds Dores. "As a locally-operated, full service grocery store, we remain dedicated, as we have been since 1977, to the communities in which our staff live and work."
In past years, Thrifty Foods has supported a variety of local charitable causes including the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock (with Courtenay Store Manager Rick Gaiga leading by example), VI Music Festival, Filberg Festival, Comox Valley Exhibition, Relay for Life, MS Walk, Alzheimer's Walk plus more than twenty local groups who benefit from the Thrifty Foods Smile Card fundraising program.
The new Comox Valley Thrifty Foods represents the third retail outlet to be developed in the coming year, after the opening of Sapperton in New Westminister this fall and Maple Ridge, also scheduled to open in 2012.
Thrifty Foods is Vancouver Island's largest private sector employer, with over 4,600 employees, and one of Canada's most respected grocery brands. Thrifty Foods is now a proud member of the Sobeys group of companies. For more information, visit www.thriftyfoods.com
