Thrifty Foods Customers and Staff Raise over $54,000 for Red Cross Relief Effort in Japan

VICTORIA, BC - On behalf of customer and staff, Thrifty Foods today announced a $54,439.00 donation toward the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in Japan. Jim Dores, President of Thrifty Foods and Paul Jenkins, Regional Council President of the BC Chapter of the Canadian Red Cross joined over twenty Thrifty Foods store managers from across BC to present a cheque at the Thrifty Foods Admiral Walk location.

"For over twenty years Thrifty Foods' staff and customers have supported the Red Cross here in BC," said Jenkins. "Today's donation is most welcome as it will help to the Red Cross to continue to provide emergency supplies where they are needed most."

To date, the Japanese Red Cross response operations have distributed more than 192,000 blankets, 183,000 pieces of clothing, 26,000 emergency relief kits and 11,000 sleeping kits.

Thrifty Foods Japan Relief Drive, initiated immediately after the earthquake and tsunami on March 10, 2011, took place through an 'at till' campaign in all 26 stores across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
