Thrifty Foods Opens 24 Hour Power Smart Grocery Store in New Westminster

October 19, 2011
Convenient Fresh Food Format Perfect for Emerging Brewery District

VICTORIA, BC - Thrifty Foods President Jim Dores and City of New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright officially opened a 24 hour grocery store in the heart of the live/work Brewery District in New Westminster.

"A twenty-four hour store offering fresh, fast and convenient food options in the heart of the Brewery District just makes sense," says Jim Dores. "For those en route to the Skytrain or visiting or working at the Royal Columbian Hospital, Thrifty Foods Sapperton provides healthy snacks and hot meals for those on the go as well as an extensive array of local, organic and everyday grocery items."

A Power Smart partner, Thrifty Foods designed the 30,000 square foot, 24 hour operation to be both energy efficient, with integrated heating, cooling, lighting and refrigeration systems, and also energy friendly with Thrifty Foods sharing excess heat with neighbouring businesses through an integrated, communal heat exchange loop.

To celebrate the grand opening, Thrifty Foods has also partnered with nearby Royal Columbian Hospital to raise funds for the hospital's Foundation. Fundraising activities include a $2,500 Facebook 'Like' campaign as well as Thrifty Food's annual Pumpkins For Charity event. Running from October 19 to October 31, Thrifty Foods donates a $1 from the sale of each pumpkin sold to local hospital foundations across BC.

"We are overjoyed to welcome Thrifty Foods into our neighbourhood given their outstanding commitment to the communities in which they do business," said Adrienne Bakker, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation President and CEO. "Thrifty Foods has an incredible and long-standing reputation for supporting local initiatives as well as those in need in our communities and we look forward to working with them to raise much needed funds for our hospital."

Thrifty Foods (www.thriftyfoods.com) was founded in 1977 in Victoria, BC. Today, Thrifty Foods, a banner of Sobeys Inc., has a total of 27 retail grocery stores across the Lower Mainland and throughout Vancouver Island.
