Our new locations in Courtenay and Maple Ridge, as well as our newest warehouse and distribution centre at the Victoria Airport Authority site, are all built with energy conservation in mind. In 2012 we also renovated three existing stores - Thrifty Foods Mill Bay, Central Saanich, and Admirals Walk - on Vancouver Island to increase their energy efficiency.
Since Earth Day 2011 we have implemented 150 energy conservation projects designed to save the equivalent of over 19,000,000 kilowatt hours per year, the same energy required to power over 1,700 BC homes. For example, we have installed additional refrigeration heat reclaim systems, retrofitted lighting and building mechanical systems, and replaced refrigerated cases with new, energy efficient models.
These projects will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 2 million kgs of CO2 per year, or the equivalent of taking 600 cars and light trucks off the road. To further reduce our Carbon Footprint our two newest locations utilize C02 refrigeration systems which will reduce their global warming emissions by 50% over the long term.
