Disaster Management

Thrifty Foods supports the ongoing training and development of over 360 Red Cross Disaster Management volunteers who support victims of fire, floods and other disasters in British Columbia and across Canada.
Red Cross Volunteers
The Canadian Red Cross is recognized as the primary support for communities in disaster and as the partner of choice for public authorities in responding to disasters around the country.

When disasters strike, Red Cross volunteers work alongside government agencies and other organizations to provide humanitarian needs such as food, water, lodging and family reunification. These highly qualified volunteers commit to extensive training!

Red Cross disaster volunteer teams in BC supported 918 clients in 116 communities last year and others were deployed to assist with the 2013 Alberta Floods and 2016 Northern Alberta wildfires. BC disaster management volunteers have also helped recovery efforts in the Philippines, Haiti, New Orleans, and beyond.

The grand total raised nationally by generous customers and from the $100,000 contribution from Sobeys Inc. towards the Northern Alberta wildfires is $4,017,403.00. Our Thrifty Foods customers and team contributed $220,663.22 towards the overall total - which is outstanding. 100% of the funds raised went to support the Canadian Red Cross.
