Feeding the Hungry

The heart of our business is food, so it makes sense that we have a passion for feeding those who are hungriest. We strive to keep bellies filled at local food banks and community centres.

We have been feeding the hungry for over 30 years through donations to food banks across BC. We provide daily donations to food banks and, together with our customers, have raised over $2.5 million in groceries for those in need.

Our annual Fresh Food for Families and BC Sharing programs provide fifteen community-based food banks with close to $400,000 a year. These funds are used to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and groceries for those in need in our communities during the holidays and throughout the year.

A special thank you to our customers and employees who participate in our food bank programs. Your generosity helps ensure that individuals and families have access to nutritious food throughout the year. If you are interested in donating items to your local food bank, download our list of Food Bank Friendly Items.

Local Hunger Initiatives

  • Fresh Food for Families

Fresh Food for Families is offered in all of our stores during the holiday season. Our customers have the option to add any amount to their grocery order at the till. Our 2016 Fresh Food for Families campaign raised over $149,000 for fifteen local food banks across BC.

  • CFAX Santas Anonymous Society

Since 1977, CFAX Santas Anonymous Society has worked to provide the children of Greater Victoria with both food hampers and gifts for Christmas. Thrifty Foods supports Santas with an annual donation and our store managers volunteer their time during the local radiothon to collect pledges by phone.
  • Our Place Society

Our Place operates in downtown Victoria providing transitional housing, meals, support and advocacy, hygiene facilities, training and more to people living on the streets of Victoria. Thrifty Foods supports this organization by selling Help End Hunger coupons at the tills of our Victoria area stores throughout the year and the proceeds go directly to Our Place, helping to purchase nutritional food items for their client meals.
  • The Food Rescue Project

Each year, $27 billion worth of edible food in Canada is wasted. Food waste and food access are major concerns in the Capital Region District (CRD) area. Thrifty Foods, the Victoria Foundation and Rotary Clubs of Greater Victoria – along with the Food Share Network – have worked together to find a solution.

Recognizing the importance of food security, the Victoria Foundation provided funding to collaborate the region-wide Food Rescue Project. Thanks to the efforts of Rotarians, Thrifty Foods and Victoria Foundation the fundraising goal was achieved raising $200,000. These funds will be used to support the development of a regional hub for food rescue, with the expected opening date late 2016.

Mustard Seed will lead the acquisition of a new warehouse, a new transportation network which will access fresh food on a daily basis.

The Food Rescue warehouse will collect and distribute perishable food donations, including fresh produce, dairy products and baked goods, from our Thrifty Foods locations in Greater Victoria. The aim of the Mustard Seed’s Food Rescue warehouse is to divert fresh, edible but imperfect food from the compost to Victorians in need in order to better food-security for all members of the community. The food will be re distributed to over 40 social service organizations in the CRD area.

Thrifty Foods has been a partner of the Mustard Seed since it began food bank operations in 1983 and is a proud partner with the Food Share Network, the Victoria Foundation and Rotary Clubs of Greater Victoria. We are all eager to provide quality food to people in need.

Thank you for your continued interest and support.

  • Victoria Women's Transition House Society

Thrifty Foods has provided gift cards to be included in the hampers for many years helping these women purchase a Christmas dinner for their families.
