Nanaimo Recycling Exchange
- Environmental Mind Grind Challenge
Thrifty Foods proudly supports the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange's "Environmental Mind Grind Challenge" by providing a barbecue for the winning elementary school class, items for the participant's bags, and a trophy for the winning group. The event is an academic trivia contest that brings together students from different schools,
and promotes responsible environmental stewardship. Teams of students sign up and work with their teacher, learning from specially prepared study packages covering eight different topics including: species, spaces, air quality, transportation demand management, energy conservation, climate change, waste reduction, and water.
BC Sustainable Energy Association
The BC Sustainable Energy Association works to deliver climate change education to grade five and six students in BC through the Climate Change Showdown. Thrifty Foods provides funding to purchase items for participating students in the program.
Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team
Working hard to preserve the Garry Oak ecosystems located on southeast Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Fraser Valley, the Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team is comprised of volunteers donating their time for this cause. With funds donated by Thrifty Foods going towards the Focus on Children Program
we are proud to be a part of this program.
Peninsula Streams Society
Thrifty Foods has provided financial support for the Peninsula Streams Society for many years helping them to continue with their work of stream restoration and habitat conservation on the Saanich Peninsula. This organization also works with local schools to provide educational seminars to students to teach them about their local streams.
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary
Located in an urban area of Victoria, Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary includes two distinct ecosystems; the Swan Lake marsh land
and the Garry Oak Meadow. Thrifty Foods has donated funds to this organization to help with the construction costs of Founders' Wharf which will also double as an outdoor class room
