We're supporting these groups who promote environmental stewardship and awareness. We also have many programs in place in our stores with the environment in mind.
Peninsula Stream Society is an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to stream restoration, protection and environmental education on the Saanich Peninsula. The organization relies on their volunteers to conduct monthly water quality monitoring and undertake various restoration projects. In 2006, Thrifty Foods helped fund the purchase of branded shirts, vests, and hats to provide their volunteers as recognition items for their many hours of service.
BC Sustainable Energy Association
The BC Sustainable Energy Association's "Cool It!" Climate Leadership Training program develops and empowers young sustainability champions in schools in BC. "Cool It!" is an interactive environmental workshop and contest for students in grades 4 to 7. In each 90 minute workshop, environmental educators use videos, games, quizzes and discussion to build on the students knowledge of climate change. Thrifty Foods proudly supports the "Cool It!" program by providing funding to help develop new materials and tools to make the program accessible to more children in BC.
Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea
Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea opened in 2009 and is an award winning aquarium and learning centre dedicated exclusively to the Salish Sea Bioregion of BC. With a mission to create experiences that engage people to learn about, explore and conserve the Salish Sea Bioregion; its wildlife, waters, land, culture and people, the aquarium strives to provide first hand experiences that foster understanding and stewardship for our environment.
Thrifty Foods proudly supports the centre’s community summer camps. Children aged 4-13 have the chance to explore and learn about the Salish Sea Bioregion through beach walks, day trips to various local islands, whale watching excursions, reflective artwork and other interactive activities. Funding by Thrifty Foods helps support these activities, excursions and materials in an effort to ensure camps remain accessible to families and help support camp leaders through training and professional development opportunities.
The Gardens at Horticulture Centre of the Pacific
The Gardens at Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, home to the Pacific Horticulture College, present a year-round garden experience that all can enjoy. This non-for-profit public garden provides learning opportunities for students in the Landscape Horticulture Certificate Program and varied Community Education courses, as well as for gardening volunteers, organized tours and special events. Funds from the Thrifty Foods Smile Card Fundraising Program have been used to bring in unique plants to the Gardens.
Ocean Wise / Vancouver Aquarium
Ocean Wise is a sustainable seafood program funded by the Vancouver Aquarium. During the month of March 2017, as part of our 40th Birthday fundraising efforts, Thrifty Foods and our customers raised $10,000 from the sales of the product of the month, 3¢ bag rebates, and generous donations at the till.
