Teaching Young Chefs Nutrition

One of the programs we are most proud of is small but mighty: small in height, anyway! Since 2008, we’ve worked with recreation centres to teach young chefs about the yumminess of healthy eating and the FUN of cooking.

In 2008, Thrifty Foods launched the Young Chef Program, in partnership with local community recreation centres. Each hands-on session is designed to familiarize young chefs with interesting food choices and delicious taste experiences during the creation of simple, yet tasty, snacks.

The program includes a store tour where participants learn how to navigate the aisles, read food labels and select fresh produce.

As part of the program, Thrifty Foods supplies all training materials, cooking ingredients and equipment, and a special branded apron.

In order to ensure that the program is affordable to all families, Thrifty Foods subsidizes the registrant's fee at each camp. Fees range from around $25 for the week-long, half-day class to around $50 for the full-time, week-long camp.
