Meet Birnie. This self professed long-in-the-tooth nonagenarian is a Sendial Phoner and has been volunteering at our Mill Bay Store since the Program began in 1987. She enjoys helping and conversing over the phone with customers, as well as interacting with other volunteers and store employees. Birnie volunteered for 15 years for the Canadian Cancer Society and also at the Cowichan Hospital gift shop. She currently volunteers as a “Granny” at her church in the nursery, cuddling babies while their mothers participate in self nurturing activities. Birnie feels that Sendial is a good community service and admits that the process has become considerably more complex over the years with the inclusion of so many more products and product varieties. She has a brother on the Mainland, two daughters in Duncan and another in Squamish, a grandson in Delta, and a granddaughter in Victoria.
