Boiled Eggs 101

Learn to perfectly boil an egg with these quick and easy tips.
Cover large eggs with at least 1 inch of cold water in a pot. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat; the water should be just moving, with small bubbles breaking on the surface. Set a timer and cook eggs as desired.
boiled egg times
  1. Soft boiled:
Boil 2 minutes, the white will be solid and the yolk warm, but still runny. Serve for breakfast in an eggcup.
  2. Medium-soft boiled:
Boil 3 minutes, the yolk will start to set, but still be runny in the centre. Serve for breakfast in an eggcup.
  3. Medium boiled:
Boil 4 1/2 minutes, the egg is set, but the yolk is still moist and a dark orange-yellow. These eggs are nice to half or quarter and set on a salad.
  4. Hard-boiled:
Boil 9 minutes, the yolk is light yellow and solid. These eggs are great for sandwiches, deviled eggs and potato salad.
Tip: Set your medium or hard boiled eggs in ice water for 3 minutes. This will contract the egg from the shell and make for easier peeling.
