Heat the oil in a large pot. Add the next 4 ingredients and cook 4 to 5 minutes. Mix in the curry powder and flour. Slowly mix in the stock. Bring to a simmer and cook until the yams are very tender, about 20 minutes. Puree the mixture in a food processor. Return to the pot and to a simmer; season with salt and pepper. Pour into bowls; drizzle with a little whipped cream and use the tip a knife to make a swirl design. Garnish with a small parsley or cilantro sprig, if desired, and serve.

Serving Suggestions

Pappadums, available in the Asian foods aisle, would make a nice, crisp bread to dunk into the soup. A gourmet cracker, such as Lesley Stowe's Raincoast Crisps, would also go great with this soup.
