How to Clean a Cooked Dungeness Crab

Cooked Dungeness crabs are available in our Seafood Department. To clean and prepare them for eating, follow these step-by-step instructions.

Step 1:

Set the crab belly-side up. Twist off the triangular shaped tail apron near the smaller back legs.

Step 2:

Turn the crab upright. Hold the lower body down with one hand, and then with the other hand pull off the top shell.

Step 3:

Pull away and discard the spongy gills from the crab.

Step 4:

With crab belly side down, firmly hold both sides of it and break into two halves. Serve the crab halves and let diner's crack and eat them at the table.

Step 5:

If you want to make eating easier, break claws off and cut legs into single pieces. Now carefully crack them with a kitchen mallet or back of a knife, then serve.
