How to Make Chinese-Style Steamed Buns

Use the steps and photos below to help you form bao. They are the steamed Chinese-style buns used in our Bao with Hoisin Chicken Chestnut Filling recipe.

Step 1:

Roll each piece of dough into a 1/4" thick oval.

Step 2:

Lightly coat the top of the dough with vegetable oil.

Step 3:

Set an oiled chop in the middle of the dough, and then fold dough in half.

Step 4:

Set dough on a square of parchment, remove chopstick, and let rise until doubled in size.

Step 5:

Set a steaming rack in a wok or large skillet. Pour in enough water to come to 1" below the rack. Bring the water to a simmer. Working in batches, set the buns on the rack, cover and steam for eight minutes, until puffed and cooked.

Step 6:

Voila! Ready to stuff with your favourite fillings, serve and enjoy.
