Turkey Tactics

Learn the basics! We've got you covered with tips for picking the right size, thawing time and temperature checks.

How to choose the right size for you

Too little turkey can be a total disaster. When it comes to feeding a crowd, having too much food is always better than having too little. Plan for leftovers like sandwiches, soups and casseroles. The rule of thumb is 1.5 lbs (680g) of turkey per person.

Or, follow this as a guide:

  • 4 Guests = 6lb
  • 6 Guests= 9lb
  • 8 Guests= 12lb
  • 10 Guests= 15lb

Thawing Time

  • Allow 24 hours for every 5lb (2.27kg) of turkey.
  • Thaw turkey in a sided container.
  • Approximate times to defrost a whole turkey in the fridge:
    10 pounds - 2 days
    15 pounds - 3 days
    20 pounds - 4 days
    25 pounds - 5 days

Taking Temperature

To take the temperature, insert a meat thermometer deep into the inner thigh avoiding the bone. Allow your turkey to rest for at least 15 minutes under tented foil to ensure a juicy and succulent bird!
  • Stuffed Turkey 185°F (85°C). Stuffing should be 165°F (74°C)
  • Unstuffed Turkey 185°F (85°C)
