Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Place the ribs meaty-side up in a roasting pan just large enough to hold them in a single layer. Sprinkle and rub ribs with five spice powder; season with salt and pepper. Pour the beer or stock into the bottom of the pan. Cover and bake two hours, or until ribs are quite tender.
When the ribs are almost done baking, preheat your barbecue to medium-high. Make sauce by combining remaining ingredients in a small pot. Set pot over medium heat and bring sauce to a gentle simmer. Cover sauce, lower heat to low, and keep warm on the stove until needed.
Grill ribs 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until nicely coloured. Turn the ribs meaty side up. Brush with some of sauce and allow it to heat through a few minutes. Transfer ribs to plates and drizzle with some of the remaining sauce. Serve any remaining sauce in a bowl alongside the ribs for dipping.
