Place the maple syrup in a small pot and set over medium-low heat; mix in the cherries and spices and heat and steep the cherries in the syrup 5 minutes. Meanwhile, combine the first 4 ingredients for the French toast in a wide, sided dish. Dip and soak the bread slices in the egg mixture a few minutes. Set a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter in it. Cook the dipped bread slices 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until golden brown, and then divide among plates. Top with the maple cherry sauce and serve.
