Method

Butter two slices of bread on one side. Set the bread, buttered-side down, on a work surface. Spread the unbuttered sides with the mayonnaise and cranberry sauce. Divide and top the bread with the ham and cheese. Spread one side of the other 2 bread slices with butter and set them on top of the ham and cheese, unbuttered side down.

Set a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. When hot, add the sandwiches and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Options:
In place of whole grain, try these sandwiches with another type of bread, such as sourdough, rye or whole wheat. Use sliced turkey breast instead of ham, or try Brie instead of Camembert.  Leave out the cranberry sauce and try flavouring the sandwiches with mango chutney.
