Combine the first 7 ingredients in a bowl. Moisten your hands with cold water and shape the meat into four, 3/4" thick, oval patties. Combine the marinara sauce and water in a 9" x 13" baking dish. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Heat the oil in a large non-stick skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and brown on both sides (don’t cook all the way through) before placing them in the baking dish. Cover and bake 25 minutes. Uncover, top each with a slice of cheese and bake 5 minutes more, or until the meat is cooked through and the cheese is melted. Divide the steaks and sauce among plates and serve.

Note: Marinara sauce is available in cans or jars. You’ll find them in the tomato products aisle.

Serve the hamburger steaks and sauce with your favourite pasta shape and a steamed green vegetable, such as spinach or broccoli.
