  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet set over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the ground beef, breaking it up well with a spoon, and cook until the meat is cooked through.

  2. Pour off any excess liquid in the skillet, and then mix the tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, chili powder and crushed chilies. Bring to a gentle simmer, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. (When ready, the mixture should be loose, with enough sauce to bind the meat. If it gets too thick, thin with a bit of water.)

  3. Taste the sloppy Joe mixture and season with salt, if needed. Set the bottom half of each hamburger bun on each of 4 plates. Spoon on the sloppy Joe mixture, set on top buns and serve, with cheese and green onion for sprinkling.

Option: If you are feeding a larger group, this Sloppy Joe recipe could be doubled or even tripled.
