Place the beans in a pot and cover with 3 to 4 inches of cold water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat until the water gently simmers. Cook the beans until just tender, but still slightly firm to the bite, about 45 minutes. Drain the beans well and then place in your slow cooker. Add all the remaining ingredients and mix well. Cover and cook the beans for 9 to 10 hours on low.
Note: This recipe is designed for an oval-shaped slow cooker with a 5 litre or more capacity.
