Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder in a bowl, then set aside. In another bowl, beat the shortening and sugar until light. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then beat in milk and vanilla extract. Beat the dry ingredients into the wet until a smooth dough forms.
Divide dough in 2; wrap and chill 30 minutes. Place a half batch of dough on a floured surface. With a floured rolling pin, roll the dough a 1/4-inch in thickness. Cut out cookies and arrange on a non-stick or parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until bottom is golden. Repeat with remaining dough. Once cooled, decorate the cookies as you wish with icing, gels, or sprinkles. These items are available in the baking aisle.
